Increasing the degree of protection and conservation of biodiversity and restoring degraded ecosystems

 

  • Implementation of management plans / sets of conservation measures / action plans for protected natural areas and for approved species of community interest

Objectives and Activities

THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT is the long-term maintenance of the favorable conservation status of the brown bear population in Romania.

 

THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES OF THE PROJECT

  • Determining the size of the population and establishing the number of individuals at the national, regional, county and local level through genetic studies;

Activity 1. Monitoring and genetic estimation of the brown bear population

 

  • Reducing human-bear conflicts by purchasing and installing protection systems for domestic animals, agricultural crops and material goods;

Activity 2. Acquisition and installation of protection systems for domestic animals, agricultural crops and material goods

 

  • Establishment of a complex for breeding, care, rehabilitation and protection of the brown bear species;

Activity 3. Establishment of a complex for the care, rehabilitation and protection of the brown bear species

 

  • Improving the conservative and institutional management of the brown bear species in order to maintain the optimal herd and increase the capacity to resolve human-bear conflicts;

Activity 4. Determining brown bear population management areas at the national level in order to ensure the optimal brown bear population.

Activity 5. Improving the institutional capacity of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Forests

 

  • Increase education, information, communication and awareness about the ecology and management of the brown bear species.

Activity 6. Organizing an information campaign and raising awareness among the general public about the conservation of the brown bear population.

 

 

 

 

 

Results

  • a sampling methodology and set of instructions;
  • an Android and iPhone compatible application for collecting genetic sample information (called GenUrs) and a genetic sample collection guide compatible with the application;
  • a video presentation of the methodology and instructions;
  • 400 people trained with the help of the video presentation of the methodology and instructions for taking genetic samples;
  • a study on the analysis of genetic samples, establishing the minimum number of individuals at national level, genetic diversity and population structure;
  • a Plan for long-term genetic monitoring of the brown bear population;
  • 1140 electric fences handed over to managers and installed in the field for
  • the protection of domestic animals, agricultural crops, material goods and the safety of the local population; the protection of domestic animals, agricultural crops, material goods and the safety of the local population;
  • 1 report on monitoring the efficiency of electric fences based on the information collected from field specialists and on the results of monitoring with the photo/video monitoring systems installed in hunting grounds;
  • normative act regarding the management zoning of the brown bear species in Romania;
  • 1 national scientific study on species management zoning of brown bear in Romania;
  • creating an infrastructure for the care, rehabilitation and protection of the brown bear;
  • 1 documentary film of maximum 30 min, 1 broadcast and a replay on a national public television and 1 broadcast on at least 4 local public stations of the film;
  • 2 radio spots, 1 broadcast/day/national radio station/spot over a period of 18 months;
  • 5 short films of 120 seconds, 2 broadcasts / short film on a national public television, 4 local public stations and 5 local private televisions;
  • 2 press conferences regarding the organized media campaign (with the participation of specialized journalists in the agro/ social/ NGO/ environment/ hunting/ specialized publications)
  • 1 portal and 1 social media page for the dissemination of information related to the development and results of the project and the direct involvement of target groups;
  • minimum 10 press articles published monthly in the national and local press;
  • 1 comparative study on the evolution of the level of information and awareness of the target groups due to the campaign and information activities.
