Short history

The Craiova Resort was established in 1954, with research activity, within the Institute for Research in Forestry at that time – (ICES Bucharest), having as its basic concern the culture of acacia on the sandy soils of the south of Oltenia, as a continuation of the works started in youth, by the first director of ICEF, the renowned forester, professor Marin Drăcea. The resort operated in a new headquarters, built by ICES, with a 20 ha Experimentation and Production Base, located in the Lunca Jiului forest in the southwest part of Craiova, under the coordination of forest engineer Nicolae Ciolacu.

In 1963, also in Craiova, a branch of the Institute for Studies and Management in Forestry (ISPF) was established, with two distinct activities: forest management and forest road design. The branch operated in a new headquarters, built by ISPF, where the current SCDEP Craiova is also headquartered.

In 1969, the INCEF Craiova Station joined the ISPF Craiova Branch, at first under the logo of the Institute of Forestry Research, Studies and Management (ICSPS) and then the Institute of Forestry Research and Development (ICAS).

Organization

The Craiova Research-Development and Experimentation-Production Station is a mixed subunit having in its structure:

  • a research team;
  • a technological development collective;
  • a collective of the National Forest Inventory (IFN);
  • Lunca Jiului Experimental Base.

The personnel structure of the resort is as follows:

  • Research Section: 1 scientific researcher grade I, 1 scientific researcher grade III, 1 research assistant, 1 research engineer, 2 main technicians;
  • Development Section: 2 technological development engineers grade I, 1 technological development engineer grade II, 9 technological development engineers grade III, 2 technological development engineers, 7 engineers, 2 technicians;
  • I.F.N. office: 3 technological development engineers grade III, 3 engineers;
  • Lunca Jiului Experimental Base: 1 forester.

Activities

The Research-Development activity is carried out within the Research Team “Forest protection” (E6), Genetics (E3) and Biometrics and forest management (E1) having the following research directions and objectives:

  • Assessing the ecological and socio-economic impact of pests and integrated forest protection;
  • Conservation and improvement of the genetic diversity of forests;
  • Ensuring management and increasing the functional effectiveness of forests.

Research-Development activities consist of:

  • Knowledge of the bioecology of the main species of pests in deciduous forests and the establishment of methods for detecting, monitoring, preventing and combating them;
  • Development of methods of surveillance, monitoring and assessment of injuries, using remote sensing means;
  • Improving technologies for aerial application of treatments against defoliating insects;
  • Development of technologies for controlling pest populations in deciduous forests using entomopathogenic microorganisms and entomophagous insects.
  • In situ and ex situ conservation of acacia genetic resources – Robinia pseudoacacia Oltenica;
  • The development of forestry facilities for the sustainable management of the forests in southwest Romania;

The I.F.N office carries out the national forest inventory within the Dolj, Olt, Vâlcea counties. Mehedinți and Hunedoara.

The Lunca Jiului Experimental Base ensures:

  • sustainable management of the forest fund on 20 ha and the application of research results;
  • carrying out experiments in the mentioned directions.
