About the project
TREESURE is a 3-year project that aims to provide a decision support system (DSS) with nature-based solution underpinned by satellite data (EAS) and the Internet of Things (IoT) system, with tree sensors being the centrepiece, for risk evaluation, management and awareness of tree failure disasters.
The project is coordinated by the University of Florence (Italy) and will be implemented by a consortium of 11 partners from 3 European countries including Romania through the “Marin Drăcea” National Institute of Research and Development in Forestry.
Project main objective:
TREESURE aims to enhance the local preparedness and disaster response to falling trees by improving the communication flow between all key stakeholders involved (first and second responders, city’s risk managers, citizens or local communities, and governments) through a novel DSS relying on advanced technologies. This DSS is based on IoT devices such as drones, sensors and ESA satellites, and nature-based solutions (NBS), using root anchoring systems, for the collection and integration of localized and regional data to enhance damage prediction and preparation for wind-related threats to forest resources.
The specific objectives
- To fully understand the case study requirements for tree health monitoring and risk management.
- To develop a DSS, supported by advanced technologies, which provides real time alerts to citizens and technicians involved in disaster management through a tree health monitoring system, collecting real-time data and identifying the risk of tree falling.
- To increase the system ownership and its suitability to the user needs by engaging key stakeholders in cocreating the interface of the decision support system.
- To demonstrate the decision support system in the operative environment, running simulations with the key stakeholders.
- To assess the sustainability of the TREESURE´s solutions evaluating their environmental and socio-economic performance.
- To maximize the impact of the project through exploitation, dissemination and communication activities.
Case studies
The project will be implemented through 3 case studies across Europe, including Cecina (Italy), Brașov (Romania), and Soria (Spain). These pilot areas will represent various urban landscaping typologies, including extensive parks, school gardens, and street trees, as well as a diversity in tree stock.
